The Plot: A drama based on China’s Tangshan Earthquake, which claimed the lives of 240,000 people in 1976.

The Story:

Based on the Tangshan Earthquake in 1976, Li Ni returns home only to find out that her 7-year-old twins are buried under the debris. She’s left with a dilemma on deciding whom she chooses to save, her son, Fonda or her daughter, Fan Teng. She chooses to save her son in the end without knowing that Fan Teng overheard the decision being made. Miraculously, she manages to survive but suffers from the painful memory of her mother’s decision. Later, a young couple adopts her but she remains traumatised by this childhood experience.

Movie Review :

I’m curious to see it bcoz I think thiz will be a great disaster movie. But in the end, I realize it is one miraculous human Drama! It’s not the special effect that makes thiz movie special, but the story itself which is so powerful. It brought up from a novel that was written by Zhang Ling. It’s telling about life of simple family with twin children, one boy and one daughter. 1976 Tangshan earthquake has killed the father, and the wife has to choose one of her children, when both of them were unfortunately trapped under concrete slab, moving the slab will simply kill one of her children.

The mother who is under necessity chooses to save the boy in emergency situation. What she doesn’t know later the girl is still alive and being adopted by other generous couple. Is thiz family going to reunite again? The cinematography in the opening scene and over about 15 minutes in the beginning is quietly astounding, but the rest later is just ordinary. Once again, the power of thiz movie is in the story. The brief performance by Zifeng Zhang as the daughter (when a little girl) is believable and memorable (like what we saw on poster). The grown up girl played by JIngchu Zhang also performs impressively. The mother figure is delivered successfully by Fan Xu, who is also a real life wife of the Director Xiaogang Feng. Feng is also known as an Actor in “Kung Fu Hustle” (2004) and many more. His directing credits include “The Banquet” (2006). Other Casts are: Daoming Chen, Chen Li, Yi Lu, etc. “Aftershock” is one crafted heart-wrenching tragedy based on a real event. It is also a great memorial to 240.000 victims. 1976 Tangshan earthquake really draws our attention more than ever. I think in these last couple years, China brings a lot of effort to build new image of their country throughout world cinema. And they seem to be successful so far, like what we saw in previous patriotic and historical movies like “Sunrise over Tiananmen Square” (2008), “City of Life and Death” (2009), “The Founding of a Republic” (2009) and many more. They are writing their history.
